Use of the Beyond Animal Testing Index

The Beyond Animal Testing Index (BATI) is an objective benchmarking tool. The Access to Medicine Index forms the source of inspiration. The BATI allows research organisations to periodically compare their efforts in animal-free innovation (TPI) and the 3Rs of reducing, refining and replacing animal studies. The BATI aims to achieve ‘healthy competition’, rewards practical successes, offers lessons and promotes social involvement, transparency and cooperation. The BATI is currently being tested at three universities and academic medical centres. When version 1.0 is ready, a first complete benchmark round can be carried out at all knowledge centres in the Netherlands. For the effectiveness of the BATI, it is essential that support and independence are ensured. The BATI provides an instrument to stimulate the transition to animal-free innovation.
