The NAM Navigator: repository on validation and acceptance of animal-free innovations
ZonMw launched April 2025 the NAM Navigator: a knowledge portal to navigate you through information on the development, standardization, validation and acceptance of New Approach Methodologies (NAM). This knowledge portal acts as an online guide providing specific information needed in each of these steps, thereby increasing the broad use of animal-free innovations.
What is the big challenge for a broad uptake of NAMs?
Before NAMs (new approach methodologies) can replace animal testing, these animal-free models need to be standardised, validated and accepted. These models are used by researchers for safety assessment of chemical compounds or efficacy testing of pharmaceutical products.
The whole process of standardisation and validation is complex; a lot of valuable information is already available, but it is often scattered across the web, kept or published by different organisations and individuals. What is missing is a central repository where all the necessary information is collected. The NAM Navigator was developed for this purpose: the aim is to make information on NAM validation for legal frameworks and regulatory guidelines easily accessible in one place for everyone.
For whom is the NAM Navigator intended?
The NAM Navigator has been developed for researchers who want to develop, validate and have a NAM scientifically accepted.
The NAM Navigator was developed and optimised with the valuable input of many experts and commissioned by TPI.
